Having been to the operating theatre our day wasn’t over. We had an afternoon to kill wandering before heading for a glowing experience.

Following the herb garrit we had some lunch in the Mudlark in the shadow of London Bridge, afterwards wandering around the almost next door Southwark Cathedral (spotting the latest cat). That led on to a wander along the river, taking in first the Anchor and further along Doggetts before crossing the bridge to what one guide book describes as London’s “first theme pub”, Blackfriars.
We weren’t really on a pub crawl though (honestly!) but making our way up to grand old St Paul’s, there for the evening to see an immersive sound and light show, Luminous.
The whole of the interior of the cathedral, magnificent enough in itself normally, had been transformed into overlapping waves of light and sound. Great walls of text washed their way down the aisles, magnificent light patterns filled the dome, intricate overlapping patterns filled transepts. It’s inevitably a difficult thing to describe in words, and the photographs don’t capture the subtle soundscape accompanying, but it was worth the hour or so wandering around. There was just time to check out the historic Cockpit, with remnants of being, well, a cock pit.
