I’ve been quite remiss in mentioning things here, so a bit of a catchup going on. Many of those things were gigs, beginning back in …

James in full flow
Crystal Palace Park hosted the one day South Facing Festival. It was quite a pleasant day, with sun and food and beer stalls. We were there to see Happy Mondays support James, an excellent combination. They were supported by Girlband (who have possibly the most un-searchable name ever), who were bolshie and decent enough. The only problem was I wasn’t sure the stage actually was South Facing.

At Forum, Kentish Town
In the girl from Mars and I found ourselves at the Kentish Town Forum again. There we enjoyed the fairly decent The Subways supporting the always great Ash. And a good time was had by all.

also saw a welcome return to The Roundhouse for a double set by The Waterboys. They took us through new stuff and their eclectic back catalogue, ensuring we saw The Whole Of The Moon.

Pure rock gods
Much loader and aggressively rock were Queens Of The Stone Age at The O2 (still a rubbish venue). They’re confident in their own abilities, and it shows in the polished performance.

Engaging with the audience
brought a new venue to us, the wonderfully art deco Troxy. We were there not for a new band, but to see an old friend in The Charlatans. They were as great as always, in a festive run through (they were supported by Seb Lowe, who had an entire unacknowledged band with him.

Waiting for the crowd to sing back
Another new venue came a in the small, intimate Electric Brixton. We were there to see a much delayed gig, which I think was meant to happen last year after Brixton Academy got closed. Suede were worth waiting for though, taking us on a romp through some new stuff and the hits.

Looking down on the action
The final gig of saw us back on familiar territory, at Apollo. Supported by the gentle Burr Island, we were there for the beautiful Ocean Colour Scene. Unfortunately Simon’s voice was failing him, but that didn’t matter when the crowd were there to sing him through. He also managed a gorgeous solo of Robin Hood at the start of the encore which was brave. Oh, and Paul Weller wandered onto stage for a couple of numbers, with PP Arnold also wandering on. A fine end to the year.
